He has been the principal investigator in >20 funded Research pPojects, including the Advanced Research Grant from the European Research Council (ERC, 2014-2019) to develop the PREDIMED-PLUS trial (http://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/188509_en.html) and a second Advanced Research Grant from ERC to develop the University of Navarra Alumni Trialists Initiative (UNATI), the largest randomized trial ever conducted on alcohol and health (2023-2028). Additionally, Dr. Martinez Gonzalez was the founder (and its Principal Investigator during >20 years) of the SUN project ("Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra"), an ongoing, multipurpose, prospective and dynamic cohort which includes more than 23,000 Spanish university graduates (http:// medpreventiva.es/xZd6Hh). During the period 2006-2013, Dr. Martinez Gonzalez was the Coordinator of the PREDIMED randomized trial through a Research Network Grant (RD 06/0041) funded by the Spanish National Institutes of Health Carlos III [ISCII-PREDIMED Research Network (www.predimed.es)]. The PREDIMED study is the largest randomized trial on diet and health conducted in Europe. Dr. Martinez Gonzalez is also the Principal Investigator-head of the CIBER-OBN group. He has been co-Principal Investigator together with Prof. Frank B. Hu of several R01 grants funded by the NHLBI and NIDDK to investigate the role of metabolomics in the PREDIMED trial.
